Sustainable Development

Sustainable Development

Development is necessary as a means of addressing and overcoming the problems currently facing the community. Sustainable development is a concept applied to help communities around the world overcome identified problems. Developments made in this context are maintained to meet current needs without impacts that could affect the ability of future generations to work on their own solutions. Sustainable development is therefore driven by five pillars identified to support its implementation, as indicated.

Pillars

The pillars that help communities partake in sustainable development include; People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnerships.

People

The interventions taken up as development initiatives by communities are to be mindful of the social consequences involved.

Planet

The activities of development require resources and as such the intervention needs to recognize that the planet’s resources are finite.

Prosperity

Development is expected to be of great value to the people and as such the economical consequences are to be taken into account by the applied interventions.

Peace

The dimension of peace is of value for the assessment of development as the social context involved may cause tension and conflict on basis of aspects such as social cohesion and inclusion.

Partnerships

In the actuation of a development intervention, it is believed that the pooling of ideas from a panel of decision-makers may be suitable in the consideration of the consequences and benefits involved and also fostering the need for social cohesion and inclusion.

Harnessing solar energy

A good example of sustainable development practice is the harnessing of solar energy for power production as it reduces environmental pollution.
